Yucatán Active - Bike Tour
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Cancún
Transfer to Playa del Carmen. Accommodation in Basic hotel.
Day 2: Playa del Carmen - Sian Ka´an
Our team will drive us to Muyil to visit three major structures: the main road “Sac Be” or “White path” (roads constructed and used by ancient Mayas) located right behind the Castle (El Castillo) leads us to a footpath going through the jungle, that, in turn, will take us to the Muyil Lagoon. After this long walk, we will get on boats equipped with ecological motors to visit two lagoons connected by an artificial channel, built by the Mayans thousands of years ago.
Afterwards we will visit X-lapak - a little archaeological site inside the nature reserve; it was once an ancient Mayan customs station.
A few meters away from X-Lapak we can go for a swim in the crystal clear water, while enjoying the unique tranquillity of the nature.
We will have time to set up our camp and enjoy the night in the Mayan community of Chunyaaxche.
Day 3: Sian Ka´an - El Señor
Having packed our stuff, we leave the nature reserve of Sian Ka’an and are headed to El Señor - a Mayan community where we’ll have a chance to find out more about Mayan traditions and to experience the everyday life of this culture. At the end of the route we will enjoy a local meal based on corn products.
After taking a lunch break we will be ready to get on our bikes again, and ride for approx. 7km towards the beautiful “Laguna Azul” or “Blue Lagoon” hidden deep in the jungle. There, we can admire a gorgeous sunset and refresh ourselves in the tranquil waters of the lagoon.
We finish the day with a spectacular dinner on the lagoon shore, right under the starry sky; if you like, you can help to start a fire and make dinner while the local guides are explaining the local cuisine to you.
Day 4: El Señor - Tihousco
Early in the morning right after a delicious breakfast we walk towards a “cenote” to swim or simply enjoy the nature there. On the way back, we will visit “El Mirador” - a panoramic view overlooking the landscape around the blue lagoon. After getting our bikes back, we will ride towards El Señor to have a delicious meal, traditionally made from the local products. In the evening we arrive in Tihosuco - a Mayan community, where we will stay with a Mayan family overnight.
Day 5: Tihousco - Kantemó
The day begins with a light breakfast and a long walk to the cornfield, where our guide will explain us how the ancient Mayas used to sow and harvest the corn (corn is a crucial food product in the Mexican culture). Some of the special sowing and harvesting techniques are still used nowadays. In the afternoon we visit a small museum dedicated to the “social Mayan war” also known as the “war of castes”. We finish the day with a special meal, after that we continue our journey to Kantemó where you have a choice between spending the night in a Mayan family or camping in the area (please let us know in advance).
Day 6: Kantemó
We will spend most of the day in Dziuche, a Mayan community, where we will have enough time to regain our strength to continue our trip.
Late in the afternoon we ride our bikes through the jungle to reach the cave of hanging snakes, where we can watch thousands of bats hunting for insects and wild animals at night. Together with our local guides, we will explore the fascinating mystery of the jungle in the dark. Our guides will show us how the hanging snakes (Elaphe favibufa) hunt and we will see the blindfish and shrimps. We will also admire fossils on the cave walls, a truly unique experience. We follow the route that will take us to the Chichankanab lagoon, where we take a swim and finally set up our camp.
Day 7: Kantemó - Kanab
After breakfast we will explore birds’ nesting area and simply enjoy the nature around us while traveling in canoes.
On our way back we will bike towards Kantemó, then we will be taken to Laguna Kanab where we will have lunch and set up our camp.
Day 8: Kanab - Felipe Carrillo Puerto
We cook breakfast surrounded by the tranquil waters of this beautiful lagoon. Afterwards we are taken to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where we have a delicious Mayan meal and enough time to regain our strength before going on a city tour by bike.
In the evening we will have dinner with a host family and spend the night in a standard local hotel.
Day 9: Felipe Carrillo Puerto - Nueva Loría
After breakfast with a host family, we will bike again to visit the Mayan community of Nueva Loría where the locals are awaiting us; a local guide will lead us into the jungle, explaining about the flora and fauna along the way. After our walk, a Mayan family in Felipe Carillo will cook a delicious lunch for us.
