Population & People

Cuba not only has the largest territory of all Caribbean states, but it also has the largest population. The population density with its 11 million inhabitants is however relatively thin in comparison to other Caribbean states. Almost a quarter of the island's population lives in the capital city Havana. Cuba's native Indians were almost entirely wiped out during the first century of colonization. The few survivors mixed in with Spaniards and African slaves, so that now all hues of skin color are represented on the island.

Culture

The country offers a wide array of festivals and events, for example ballet and Latin music festivals, the biannual festival of plastic arts and film festivals. Cuba is also known for its numerous famous writers, dancers, musicians, singers, painters and poets.

Religion

The Cuban constitution guarantees freedom of religion and separation of church and state. The majority of Cubans are Catholics, although some adhere to Afro-Cuban religions.

Sport

Many excellent sportsmen come from Cuba, especially baseball players and boxers.
